In epoca romana la Liguria era attraversata da un'importante arteria di comunicazione consolare che portava alle Gallie: ad Albenga essa attraversava la città e conduceva all'attuale città di Alassio.
 

In centro storico la via Julia Augusta si potrebbe trovare scavando circa 3 metri sotto l'attuale via Medaglie d'Oro, cardo del castrum romano. La nostra casa vacanze vi si affaccia direttamente e con un po' di fantasia si potrebbe immaginare il castrum di allora! Il decumano invece era rappresentato dall'attuale via D'Aste.
 

Il tratto più naturalistico della via julia Augusta  è ancora oggi totalmente percorribile a piedi o in mtb, è quasi completamente pianeggiante e praticabile anche da famiglie con bambini. Un percorso di circa 6 km e di un'ora di comoda passeggiata conduce alla chiesa di Santa Croce ad Alassio attraverso un paesaggio quasi intatto e con vista mozzafiato sull'isola Gallinara.


The Liguria Region was once crossed by a Roman ancient road, called Julia Augusta, which was used to reach Gaul and which connected Albenga to Alassio. Today this ancient road passes through the Roman centre of the city, exactly 3 meters under the actual Via Medaglie D'Oro, which represents the ancient Roman cardo. The Decumanus was the actual Via D'Aste. Our apartment is then exactly situated on the ancient cardo!

The Julia Augusta exists still today and can be visited both by foot and mountain bike. It is an easy road, good also for families with young children. It is about 6 km long and connects Albenga to Alassio in about one hour. It also gives you a breathtaking view of the landscape and of the Gallinara Island.

                                            

Da Albenga questa antica via si raggiunge superando il Ponte Rosso in direzione ovest e seguendo sia la segnaletica stradale, sia il percorso stradale a pallini blu che parte dal centro storico.

Starting your visit from Albenga old centre, cross the Red Bridge heading west and follow the brown road signs and the blue dots on the floor.

                             


Questo percorso è fortemente consigliato sia come passeggiata naturalistica, sia come passeggiata archeologica: lungo di esso infatti si possono ammirare sia il complesso delle terme romane e della chiesa medievale di San Clemente lungo il Centa, sia il complesso di San Calocero, situato alle pendici settentrionali del Monte di San Martino, in corrispondenza di un 'area che ha restituito preesistenze di età romana imperiale.

This walk is recommended both for its natural background and its archaeological value. Along the Julia Augusta you will discover the ancient Roman baths, the church of Saint Clement  (in the Centa river) and the archaeological site of Saint Calocero.

   

Quest'ultimo è costituito dai resti di un insediamento funerario tardo antico, su cui si impiantò la chiesa di San Calocero: essa rappresenta la prima basilica cristiana di Albenga, sorta tra i secoli IV e V e dedicata al santo, secondo la tradizione un ufficiale romano morto martire nel secolo II d.C. presso la foce del Centa. L'area archeologica relativa al sito pluristratificato di San Calocero comprende i resti di una chiesa tardo-antica con successive fasi altomedievali e medievali di un monastero di Benedettine e Clarisse, abbandonato alla fine del XVI secolo.

Qui sono venute alla luce - dopo le campagne di scavo del 2014 - le famose "streghe bambine", ossia gli scheletri di due adolescenti, una sepolta a testa in giù e l'altra bruciata e tumulata sotto diversi lastroni di pietra; si tratta di sepolture molto anomale che hanno generato stupore tra gli studiosi ed alimentato una notevole eco mediatica.

Consigliamo questa passeggiata soprattutto in primavera, autunno ed inverno, vista la completa esposizione a sud-est.

Saint Calocero represents Albenga first Christian Church: it was built between the IV and the V century A.D. and it was dedicated to a roman martyr officer who died in the II century A.D. near Centa river. During the Middle Ages it became a monastery of sisters and it was then abandoned during the XVI century. It is famous also for its graves. In 2014, during archeological excavations, two human bodies were found: according to the experts they belonged to two young "witches", who were buried upside down the first and burned the second.

We recommend this walk expecially during spring, autumn and winter, for its southern exposure.
